01 / DECISION

Define the file state

A proposal team may share a Windows device with finance, design, support or temporary staff. A PC-side password boundary can reduce casual access, but it must not block the sync client, approved user or backup task.

Working rule

Restrict the supported local sync folder only after confirming users, services, offline work and the recovery path on the exact PC.

02 / PROCEDURE

Run the control sequence

  1. 01

List Windows accounts and services that need the folder.

  2. 02

Pilot the boundary with fictional proposal documents.

  3. 03

Test lock, unlock, restart, sign-out and reconnect behavior.

  4. 04

Verify Box Drive synchronization and the approved editing workflow.

  5. 05

Document the password owner, recovery route and removal procedure.

03 / EVIDENCE

Record the local and provider layers

A useful control record names the proposal, Box workspace, Windows device, local path, accountable owner, permitted users, offline state, link audience, backup evidence and next review date. Keep passwords and client-confidential details out of the record. Use fictional documents for testing and preserve an approved recovery copy before changing the only working folder.

Recheck the design after Box Drive, Windows, Cloud Secure, account, device, storage or network changes. Confirm both the local experience and the provider state: a successful local lock does not prove a link was revoked, while a correct Box permission does not remove downloaded or cached Windows copies. Escalate unexplained mismatches instead of overwriting evidence near a bid deadline.

04 / BOUNDARY

Keep the claim narrow

The boundary is local to the tested PC; it does not alter Box permissions, revoke links, enforce MFA or bypass an already authorized cloud account.

Test on the intended Windows account and exact local path, confirm the Box Drive client remains healthy, and verify the separate recovery copy without relying on the protected folder. Review collaborator and link state directly in Box. If the requirement includes centralized endpoint policy, device encryption, managed identities, legal hold or enterprise audit, use controls designed for those needs.

05 / QUESTIONS

Common questions

Does locking the local folder revoke a Box sharing link?

No. Manage links and collaborators in Box.

Does sync replace a separate backup?

No. Sync can propagate deletion or conflict; maintain and test a separate recovery copy.

Can a PC tool recover a stolen Box account?

No. Provider MFA, sessions and account recovery are separate controls.
