01 / DECISION

Define the file state

A locally restricted folder may still be accessible through a valid Box link, collaborator account, mobile session or browser login. Stolen credentials can reach the provider without touching the protected Windows folder.

Working rule

Manage Box sharing links, collaborators, MFA and account recovery at the provider layer instead of attributing those controls to a PC tool.

02 / PROCEDURE

Run the control sequence

  1. 01

Review current collaborators and shared links for the proposal.

  2. 02

Set the narrowest audience and expiration supported by policy.

  3. 03

Require provider MFA and protect account-recovery channels.

  4. 04

Remove stale sessions, devices and collaborators promptly.

  5. 05

Record the recipient, purpose and revocation decision for each release.

03 / EVIDENCE

Record the local and provider layers

A useful control record names the proposal, Box workspace, Windows device, local path, accountable owner, permitted users, offline state, link audience, backup evidence and next review date. Keep passwords and client-confidential details out of the record. Use fictional documents for testing and preserve an approved recovery copy before changing the only working folder.

Recheck the design after Box Drive, Windows, Cloud Secure, account, device, storage or network changes. Confirm both the local experience and the provider state: a successful local lock does not prove a link was revoked, while a correct Box permission does not remove downloaded or cached Windows copies. Escalate unexplained mismatches instead of overwriting evidence near a bid deadline.

04 / BOUNDARY

Keep the claim narrow

Cloud Secure does not revoke Box links, configure MFA, control provider sessions, recover accounts or reduce permissions already granted in Box.

Test on the intended Windows account and exact local path, confirm the Box Drive client remains healthy, and verify the separate recovery copy without relying on the protected folder. Review collaborator and link state directly in Box. If the requirement includes centralized endpoint policy, device encryption, managed identities, legal hold or enterprise audit, use controls designed for those needs.

05 / QUESTIONS

Common questions

Does locking the local folder revoke a Box sharing link?

No. Manage links and collaborators in Box.

Does sync replace a separate backup?

No. Sync can propagate deletion or conflict; maintain and test a separate recovery copy.

Can a PC tool recover a stolen Box account?

No. Provider MFA, sessions and account recovery are separate controls.
